David Hertzberg Scholarship Fund

Named for one of Temple Sinai’s founders, Dave Hertzberg served as chairman of the synagogue’s Religious Committee for over 25 years. He was also a synagogue vice president and a lifetime Board member. His quiet presence was most conspicuous during the High Holy Days when he meticulously assigned the honors. Dave holds the historic distinction of having hosted in his home in West Oak Lane in 1942 the committee meeting at which time Rabbi Sidney Greenberg was introduced and engaged by the congregation.

To assist congregants in less affluent times to make contributions to the then-fledging congregation, Dave was instrumental in organizing and administering the “West Oak Lane Subscriber’s Association.” By this means, members were able to borrow money at modest interest rates in order to make a meaningful contribution to the new synagogue’s development. His well-known preoccupation with Jewish education prompted the synagogue to establish this fund in his honor on the 25th anniversary of his chairmanship of the Religious Committee.
