Bruce Winokur was the definition of a "Temple Sinai baby." Schooled at Temple Sinai from Gan until he went to Akiba, his love of Judaism and the Hebrew language was fostered right here. Bruce was a member of Cantor Chaitovsky's choir from age 12 and from the earliest years, he towered above all the other choir members in stature, and boomed beneath them in baritone. His voice and his joy in song were well known fixtures during Shabbat mornings. Bruce’s experiences with Temple Sinai’s choir led him to join Arbel Chorale, then ultimately the Rottenberg Choir in New York. Until it became physically difficult, Bruce used practically every visit back from New York as an excuse to go up on the bimah and sing, and for many years he acted as chazzan for the auxiliary services on the High Holy Days. Bruce's voice was heard around the world, but his roots were always firmly planted in Temple Sinai's soil. |
